I use a little bit of everything. In LA 201, we use novels, excerpts from literature, short stories, narratives, interviews; in Mass Media, I use quite a bit more from the visual component because we don't have any quality materials for the course. I pull from the web a lot for that course. I retweet information on timely articles/ideas going on in the media. Not all students have twitter, so it supplemental for the most part.

It's interesting. As we look at CCSS and Smarter Balanced Assessment sample items, the idea of text has expanded to include anything we view that is intended to communicate a message...graphs, charts, videos, emails, songs. It no longer only refers to words on a page. It really is just as important for students to be able to "read" all types of texts. It's exciting and overwhelming at the same time.
