I do a lot of different things in the classroom to prepare students. My objectives and tasks vary given the age level that I am teaching. In the past when I taught Juniors, I would focus heavily on college preparedness and skills to use at the collegiate level. Now that I have tenth graders, I continue to focus on reading comprehension and critical thinking, but the students are just learning (or re-learning) these concepts. I really focus in on study skills; I think too many of our grads at Bay Port are not exposed to the requirements of studying properly. For example, if a teacher is presenting a powerpoint or slideshare program, the students think they should just copy what is on the slide. I always tell my students, you can get the powerpoint from the website; you want to record what ADDITIONAL information I am offering.
